Amanda Beale is a girl who loves books (Spinellie 10-13)! She is the first person to know Maniac's real name (29). She is very important to the story because her family allows Maniac to live with them. Since then, the Beale's and Maniac have lived on 728 Sycamore Street in the East End (44). In the story, Amanda sacrifices her room for Maniac (45). Maniac reads all of her books and is waiting for her to finish the Encyclopedia A (56). In chapter 18, Amanda fights with Maniac about staying home. She encourages him to be happy and stay with the Beale's (64-66). Also, Amanda teaches Maniac about Cobble's knot (67). Amanda influences Maniac so much in this story. She loves him and allows him to be part of her family. I think that Jerry Spinelli is trying to display the love of family, books, education, and other things through her character. She is a good roll model for Maniac, her siblings, and to readers!

Thanks for the post! Don't forget to check your mechanics ("Spinellie" and the works cited section). What is the importance of Amanda knowing Maniac's real name? Is there any other importance to her besides her family letting Maniac live with them? I appreciate the facts, but remember to explain how they describe Amanda's character.
